The role reports to the Research Department Manager and is located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

ABB seeks interns to work at its US Research Center in Raleigh, NC in various areas of research for Summer 2022. You will work with power grid specialists to develop cutting edge research and development related to distribution grid applications and modeling.



Your responsibilities

  • Conduct literature survey and benchmarking to assess the state of art methods for a given problem
  • Actively participate in applied research activities in the area of distribution automation applications and modeling, resulting in proofs of concept, prototypes, patents, and/or academic publications
  • Contribute to the promotion of the application of distribution grid intelligence within ABB’s customer industries, and develop prototype solutions using digitalization technologies such as digital signal processing and Matlab/Python scripting and programming
  • Model and simulate of different types of grid following and grid forming converters using Matlab/Simulink
  • Model and simulate power electronics based microgrid and distribution systems at various fault scenarios using Matlab/Simulink
  • Support simulation system data output mechanisms, e.g., transfer simulated data to usable output format for Matlab or other systems
  • Debug, test and validate core algorithms in a mockup or full-blown setup



Your background

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in the US- PhD or master’s student in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering (PhD preferred)
  • GPA 3.0 +
  • Must be currently authorized to work for ABB in the US
  • Digital signal processing and programming experience (e.g., Python, Java, C/C++) is a plus
  • Knowledge and experience with utility communication technologies (DNP3 and IEC 61850 GOOSE/Sampled Values)
  • Knowledge of distribution system apparatus and operations is a big plus
  • Knowledge of different types of grid following and grid forming converters and control
  • Knowledge of power system fault protection
  • Modeling and simulation expertise in Matlab/Simulink
  • Knowledge and experience with distribution system modeling systems and their related data output mechanisms
  • Familiarity with GridLAB-D or other modeling environments is a plus
  • Willingness to quickly acquire in-depth knowledge of new technologies and application domains
