Responsible for coordinating and/or execution of all efforts involved in thereception, documentation, witnessing, sampling and preparation of samples. Also responsible forweighing and drafting/supervising of loading of different consignments including vessels and bargesESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Schedule preparation and field personnel as needed to ensure that all samples are properlyreceived, identified, prepared, and submitted to the laboratory in a timely manner.* Determine the priority status of all samples in each day’s batch and ensure the expeditedprocessing of samples to meet clients’ requirements.* Train all new preparation and field technicians and reinforce their training with copies of applicableASTM, or other current standards being used to prepare samples at that time.* Develop and maintain maintenance schedules for all equipment located in the preparation andfield department.* Responsible for purchasing all preparation and field equipment and supplies. A written list ofall items required will be developed and reviewed with the branch manager prior to purchase.These lists should be reviewed periodically for content and effectiveness.* Perform annual performance evaluations on all preparation and field technicians.* Review all round robin and quality control data on a daily basis and update all qualitycontrol logs and charts at least weekly.* Develop a storage system where all preparation and field worksheets, notebooks, tablets, andother paperwork or files can be stored for a period of time that meets current branch andcompany regulations.* Responsible for enforcing all safety rules and regulations. This applies to all personsemployed in the preparation and field department as well as anyone visiting or passingthrough the areas.* Schedule and conduct a review meeting once each month for the purpose of reviewing and/orupdating procedures, discussing existing or potential problems, reinforcing safety rules, anddetailing work schedules.* Responsible for ensuring that all calibrations, standardizations, and equipment maintenanceare performed at the specified times, that they are in accordance with all company proceduresand specifications, and the results of these tests are recorded in all logs.* Instruct all new employees on the confidentiality aspects of analytical reports and information,and perform periodic reviews.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:Minimum: High School graduate or equivalent.Preferred: High School Graduate with two years college.
WORK EXPERIENCE:Preferred: Five years with the company performing similar duties.Two years working closely with areas regarding sample preparation.Minimum: Two years with the company performing similar duties.Two years working in the preparation department.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: Basic knowledge of computers, calculators, copy machines, and fax machines. Should be familiar with Microsoft Office products. Should be mechanically inclined with excellent organizational skills.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:* Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, material safety data sheets, and procedure manuals.* Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.* Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:* Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, and volumes.* Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY:* Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.* Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:* Capable of routinely lifting 50 pound bags of coal from the tailgate of a truck. In certain instances, these bags may need to be lifted above shoulder height.* On occasion, must be able to climb stockpiles of coal to obtain samples. This will include awkward standing, climbing on a shifting surface, and carrying a bag from location to location as you are filling it (as the weight increases from 0 to 50 pounds).* Be capable of climbing ladders to access barges or sampling stations.* Must be capable of climbing stairs, sometimes to a height of seven stories, to access mechanical coal-sampling system components.* Be capable of performing barge-top sampling which includes awkward standing, climbing on a shifting surface, and carrying a bag of coal from location to location as you are filling it. This type of sampling may also require that you physically remove the bags from the cargo area of the barges and carry each of the 50-60 pound bags of coal the length of several barges and may at times require the carrying of these bags up a steep river embankment.* Must be willing to perform all duties in inclement weather. Weather conditions can vary from extremely hot days with no shade in the summer to freezing rain and bitter cold in the winter.* Must be capable of physically moving, rolling, or sliding preparation equipment that may weigh several hundred pounds.* Must be capable of stooping, bending, twisting, and sometimes crawling into preparation equipment for the purpose of performing maintenance.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:* Must be capable of driving larger trucks, 16,000 GVW minimum.* Must be adept at handling vehicles with manual transmissions (minimum of eight gears).
