Job description
Materials scientist, working within the Alsip Packaging Materials team, responsible for the evaluation and characterization of packaging materials, primarily steel and aluminum. The role is primarily lab based and is responsible for generating data and reports in support of materials development, qualifications and failure investigations. The role requires good materials knowledge, communication, people skills and the ability to work flexibly to deliver to challenging timescales.
Support the Characterization and Evaluation of Packaging Materials
Responsible for the delivery of technical data and reports in support of projects and technical support work
Develop knowledge of packaging materials, primarily steel and aluminum, to support the cross functional activities within the Alsip labs
Maintain laboratories, equipment and procedures
Maintain high standards for safety and quality by ensuring job procedures, risk assessments, audits, training records and equipment maintenance are current and in compliance with Crown requirements
Lead the on-going improvement of the laboratories and equipment
Develop and maintain relationships with co-workers from other Crown sites, suppliers, and colleagues in related industries to understand current developments in laboratory testing and analysis
Job requirements
Bachelor’s degree in materials science or metallurgy
  • 2 years laboratory experience either in university or industry
  • Proficient in operation of and analysis using SEM
Steel/tinplate/polymer packaging industry experience
  • Demonstrable know-how and skills in materials evaluations
  • Good communication
  • Good mechanical aptitude
Six Sigma or related training and practical experience of these techniques
