Job description
Works in an R&D environment to develop ball bearing solutions required to manufacture high-end x-ray tubes.  Designs x-ray tube rotating components with focused attention on critical functional requirements.  Performs structural, rotordynamic, and other analyses or coordinates this effort with others.  Develops test protocols and coordinates efforts to test hypotheses and run experiments.  Collaborates with other engineers and technicians in their development efforts.

Key Duties and Job Tasks:
 
  • Create and execute simulations including structural, rotordynamic, and thermal models of rotating assemblies using FEA tools, including ANSYS
  • Designs x-ray tube rotating assembly components, including detailed form and dimensional tolerances
  • Performs ball bearing analyses using bearing analysis software
  • Works with vendors to ensure designs are suitable for manufacturing and that end use requirements are met
  • Run experiments to test hypotheses and improve outcomes
  • Debug test setups, instrumentation, equipment, and simulations autonomously
  • Writes articulate scientific reports, documenting simulation results, experimental protocols, and outcomes
  • Works collaboratively with other departments to obtain components, tooling, and equipment for testing

Skills and Knowledge:
Required:
  • Understands rotordynamics, frequency analysis, and ball bearing operation
  • Experience designing and analyzing components for rotating assemblies
  • Concrete understanding of appropriate dimensional and form tolerancing schemes, including GD&T
  • Detailed working knowledge of ANSYS including structural, thermal, and rotordynamic simulations
  • Experience with bearing analysis software is preferred
  • Ability to instrument and measure critical factors associated with rotating assemblies, including vibration
  • Adept at processing large raw data sets into meaningful consolidated results and recommendations
  • In-depth experience with software tools such as LabView and MATLAB is a plus
  • Highly motivated, self-driven, organized, high attention to detail
  • Demonstrated integrity, initiative, innovation, and passion
  • Proficient in presenting technical information in both oral and written formats 
  • Proficient in utilizing business tools such as: E-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of design processes and approaches, optimization, and manufacturing processes

Typical Education and Experience:
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Physics with several years related experience.  MS or PhD is preferred.
