Media Relations Manager

The Media Relations Manager role will support the Company activities in public relations, organizational communications, media relations, and government relations. The Media Relations Manager utilizes a Corporate Communications team comprised of consultants and Clayton team members to engage a variety of communications skills, competencies, and tools to support efforts to inform and educate various audiences about the Company. Together this group further advances the company’s reputation, mitigates risk and keeps Clayton employees informed and engaged. This person will need to have a natural balance of humility, confidence and adaptability depending on the nature of each project and the stakeholders/leaders involved. We require a person to fill this role who is naturally curious, driven to perform and will ultimately push us to improve communications for the company.


POSITION DUTIES AND OBJECTIVES: 

  • Provide strategic vision to the company’s overarching media relations objectives
  • Coordinate with consultants and Clayton team members to manage proactive and reactive media relations goals
  • Oversee or directly produce written copy for press releases, white papers, talking points, media advisories and other PR content
  • Creating and maintaining relationships with a variety of stakeholders working within and outside of the company – including press contacts and third-party organizations
  • Generating targeted pitch lists to produce positive media coverage
  • Oversee the monitoring and reporting media coverage for crisis management and/or positive opportunities
  • Work with consultants to further media and government relations initiatives, vet media opportunities and make recommendations to executive-level leadership
  • Stay connected on industry news and happenings through housing trade associations, including some travel to attend conferences, meetings, etc.
  • Provide communications support to philanthropic initiatives involving the company, non-profit partners and other stakeholders
  • Work with Corporate Communications group to assess and mitigate risk, and to further company objectives and initiatives (the “Corp Comm” group is primarily responsible for the risk management elements of the role, including involvement from the company’s General Counsel and its outside consultants)
  • Coordinate media training for company spokespeople–acting as a spokesperson when appropriate

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Proven experience in communications and PR
  • Must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be a confident self-starter and be adept at both independent and collaborative team work styles.
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational ability; ability to work under pressure amid distractions and interruptions
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism or related field of study or equivalent education, training experience or business equivalent
  • Confidence in public speaking is a plus
  • At least 10 years of experience in journalism or related field is highly preferred
  • Experience in building and guiding teams is highly preferred
  • Strategic communications planning and program execution experience is preferred
  • Creative and strategy-driven thought process
  • Some travel required
