MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) is the largest public transportation agency in North America. The combined work of our 50,000 employees contributes to NYCT's success in providing mass transit service throughout the five boroughs of New York City.   The Electrical Power subdivision of Subways Maintenance of Way is responsible for the operation, planning, managing, testing, inspection, repair, renewal, and maintenance of the power substations, high voltage and traction feeder cables, as well as battery, control, supervisory, communication, antenna and fiber optic cables and factory testing.   The Power Subdivision also serves as the Energy Management and Contract Compliance liaison between NYCT and outside electric power service providers and public utilities, such as Con Edison and PSEG.

JOB DUTIES: Power Cable Maintainers maintain, install, inspect, test, alter and repair power feeder cable systems and communication cable systems, both aerial and underground, between generating plants, substations and circuit breaker houses, between the Main Distribution Frame Room and the Telephone Terminal Boxes throughout the system, including: low voltage control cables, manholes, duct lines and related appurtenances. They splice single and three-conductor lead-covered cables, multi-conductor and communication cables and replace faulty sections, conduct tests for faults, drive motor vehicles, prepare reports and perform related work.  Refer to the Notice of Examination (NOE) for additional job duties.

Special Working Conditions: Power Cable Maintainers may be required to work various shifts, including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

HOW TO QUALIFY:   This position requires several years of journey-level experience. Please view the “How to Qualify” Section of the Notice of Examination to determine if you meet the requirements for this title.    

Driver License Requirement: At the time of appointment you must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in New York with no disqualifying restrictions that would preclude the performance of the duties of this title.
