The primary purpose of this position is the application to medication assistance programs on behalf of patients utilizing eRecovery software to drive cost savings within a health system. The goal is to access free medications directly from pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers’ Patient Assistance Programs (PAP) via application process for needy un-/under-insured people

This position is located at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ. This position requires candidates who are bilingual in Spanish. In addition, they must have an active Arizona pharmacy technician license or are willing and eligible to obtain, and also have a national pharmacy technician certification.


  • Identify eligible patients and medications; manage and process applications to pharmaceutical manufacturers’ PAP programs; monitor and track value of drugs recovered for billing and reporting processes; and develop/report out key savings and opportunities for the health system
  • Build relationships with and act as liaison to physicians, patients and PAP programs
  • Maintain daily contact with patients, nurses, physicians, social services, reimbursement specialists, pharmacy personnel, and PAP programs to ensure high level of service and assist in program participation
  • Answer pharmacy’s questions regarding day-to-day operational issues, product/vendor information
  • Educate physician, patient and drug companies on program mission, guidelines, requirements and appropriate referral
  • Extensive patient communication/education to determine eligibility for assistance
  • Identify and resolve rejected applications, including accessing comparable drug regimen
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of patient information


  • Acute hospital experience preferred
  • 3+ years of work experience in one or a combination of pharmacy operations, hospital patient financial counseling, reimbursement/prior authorization, or patient assistance
  • Arizona Pharmacy Technician certification required
  • National pharmacy technician certification (PTCB) highly preferred
  • Background in social work preferred

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

  • This position requires someone who is bilingual in Spanish
  • Must be detail oriented with strong follow-up skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to understand and follow instructions
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Strong written and verbal communication; strong telephone presence/etiquette
  • Able to work independently and solve problems on behalf of Cardinal and the customer
  • Must be able to prioritize work to maximize job effectiveness
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must have knowledge of hospital and clinic operations
  • Experience working in a high volume, dynamic (changing) environment is necessary
  • Must have experience working with the public in a healthcare environment
  • Experience with low-income/special needs public is preferred
  • Experience with social programs and/or charitable organization is helpful
