Research and Development Engineering is responsible for developing and implementing new products through adherence to established design control processes and good engineering and documentation practices.


Job Description


This individual will be responsible for managing and/or supporting projects for the development of new products or product improvements in the medical disposables area with emphasis on mechanical designs for a global market.  He or she will provide technical leadership regarding the design, testing, and use of medical devices.  The individual must be willing and able to coordinate and communicate the efforts of R&D, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Planning/Logistics, Packaging/Labeling and Outside Partners.

The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic team that supports a diverse set of product areas, including:  safety needles & syringes, sharps containment, prefilled IV flush syringes, neonatal medication delivery, cardiothoracic drainage technologies, and OR fluid management.


Accountabilities

  • Build strong relationships with Marketing partners to understand product application, market dynamics, current strengths and future opportunities.
  • Project Leadership – responsible for leading cross-functional teams for derivative or smaller platform projects.  In this role, the engineer will coordinate the efforts of extended team members representing a variety of functional disciplines.
  • Serve as the technical expert for larger new product development programs.
  • Creative Problem Solver – identify technical risks up front, develop and execute mitigation plans and provide team with direction on how to remove or avoid roadblocks. 
  • Design History File (DHF) Documentation and adherence to guidelines and requirements associated with FDA/QSR design controls.
  • Provide effective technical day to day support for product lines under scope of responsibility. This includes timely response and good customer service for procurement and the manufacturing plants.


Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical, Plastics, Biomedical Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in medical product development  highly preferred
  • Ability to train and coach others from technical expertise
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced knowledge of medical device design controls preferred
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) training or certification preferred
  • Leadership skills, including mentoring, and talent development
  • Advanced knowledge of 3-D CAD systems preferred
  • Experience with plastics product design preferred
  • Experience with injection molding and/or extrusion preferred
  • Knowledge of MS Office, MS Project, and Minitab software
