As Research Scientist, you will be a key member of our R&D Team contributing directly to our development of next generation technologies for building, community, and grid energy management by focusing your research efforts on the integration of distributed energy resource (DER) technologies. You’ll have a great opportunity to share worldwide research and development efforts and successes for several important technology areas, including systems and solutions, software & control, and connected systems.

Your responsibilities

  • Conduct resilient power distribution grid research, including building and community energy management, DER integration and control, and distribution grid-related energy management systems
  • Develop, test, validate, and certify building, community, and distribution grid technologies and systems designed to enable building/grid power demand management and energy efficiency
  • Participate in internal/external demonstrations of ABB’s technology leadership in the smart building and modern power system areas
  • Support the pilot application of the developed technologies on utility, commercial or industrial premises
  • Contribute to the generation, and approvals of IP, including patents for ABB
  • Publish results in peer review journals and attend top conferences sponsored by IEEE Power Engineering Society and other related professional societies

Your background

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering is required with a minimum of 2 or more years of R&D experience in building, community, and grid energy management systems or building energy and active power distribution system modeling and control projects
  • Recent PhD in electrical engineering graduates, with related research work are encouraged to apply
  • Prefer experience and research knowledge of modern power distribution systems, including distributed energy resource (DER) integration requirements and challenges, and grid-connected microgrid design and operations
  • Knowledge of DNP3, Modbus, IEC61850, BACnet, LonTalk, OPC UA, or Zigbee protocols strongly preferred
  • Must have familiarity with Software-as-a-Service (Saas) technologies, as well as experience in Matlab, Energy Plus, Opal-RT or similar modeling platforms
  • Experience with Python, C++, C#, JavaScript, or other programming languages is a plus
  • Ability to comfortably collaborate with the US government (e.g. DOE), OEM vendors, electric utilities, national laboratories, and academia is required
  • Experience and/or technical knowledge of the following is a plus:
  • Internet of Things (IoT) architecture and related practices
  • Building system modeling and building information system (BIM)
  • Digital signal processing and machine learning (ML) techniques
  • Relational database design and SQL programming
  • Microsoft Visual Studio or similar software development platforms
  • Must have ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment, at a global level
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
