The Associate Counsel provides legal support in a wide range of areas in health care operations and business. The Associate Counsel will generally work with and at the direction of a more senior attorney but may work autonomously on selected matters within designated areas. This attorney must be able to interact effectively with all levels of staff and management in connection with matters handled.

The Associate Counsel should have experience with contracts, transactions, regulatory involving hospitals, physicians and other healthcare providers, nonprofit corporate governance, and other legal issues that typically arise in connection with the operation of nonprofit healthcare systems. This attorney must have solid knowledge of health care laws and regulations, including those relating to: Stark, Anti-Kickback and other Fraud and Abuse provisions, HIPAA privacy and security, and tax exemption.

This position requires the ability to work at the level of a law firm junior to mid-level associate. The Associate Counsel should demonstrate initiative, sound judgment and clear thinking, with a strong commitment to continuous learning and client service. This attorney must have the ability to recognize significant legal and operational matters to be addressed in conjunction with senior attorneys or management.

The Associate Counsel reports to and is supervised by the Vice President Deputy General Counsel. The Associate Counsel also works under the supervision of Vice President Regional General Counsel and other senior attorneys in the Legal Services Department. This position requires the ability to work collaboratively with all members of the Legal Services Department and with other CHRISTUS staff to achieve results. It also requires providing services in a consistently timely, professional and courteous manner in a diverse setting.

Collaborative and Cooperative Contacts:

  • Vice PresidentRegional General Counsel and other attorneys, paralegals and administrative staff in Legal Services Department.
  • System and Regional leaders, and other Associates.


Requirements
Education/Skills:
  • Juris Doctor Degree.
  • Thorough knowledge of all health care related laws and regulations.

Experience:

  • At least 2.5 years of health law experience in a law firm or in-house counsel setting.

Skills:

  • Strong legal writing, research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to efficiently analyze large amounts of information, identifying key facts and core principles.
  • Ability to succinctly describe legal issues as applied to particular operational contexts in oral and written communications with System and Regional leaders and staff, as well as other attorneys.
  • Ability to keep abreast of relevant industry and related legal developments and reflect such knowledge in legal work product and advice.
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work on multiple, simultaneous and diverse assignments.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas or ability to become licensed within one year of starting work.
