Job description

The Systems / Security Engineer ensures the secure operation of Chickasaw Nation Industries in-house computer systems, servers, and network connections.  This position reviews server and firewall logs, scrutinizes network traffic, establishes and updates virus scans, and troubleshoots related issues. The Systems / Security Engineer helps to ensure maximum performance and benefit by resolving security breaches and vulnerabilities in a timely and accurate fashion.  This position also establishes and maintains network performance by building net configurations and connections, and by troubleshooting network problems.


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Establishes the networking environment by designing systems configurations and directing systems installations.  Defines, documents and enforces systems standards.  Accomplishes information systems and organization mission by completing related results as needed.

Monitors network to maximize performance.  Troubleshoots network problems and outages.  Schedules upgrades, and collaborates with network architects on network optimization.

Secures network system by establishing and enforcing policies, and by defining and monitoring access.

Provides status reports on network operations.  Gathers / prioritizes needed information, and manages assigned projects. 

Designs and deploys new applications, as well as enhancements to existing applications / software / operating systems.

Gauges the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems.  Develops and implements strategies for improving / leveraging systems.

Proposes and creates system design models, specifications, diagrams and charts for use by the programmer and development teams.

Collaborates with network staff to ensure smooth and reliable operation of software and systems for fulfilling business objectives and processes.

Designs and performs server and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the company’s disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.

Works with executive team members, decision makers, and stakeholders to define business requirements and systems goals, and to identify and resolve business systems issues.

Integrates servers into enterprise systems, which includes database, e-mail, print and backup servers, and their associated software.

Ensures system connectivity of all servers, shared software, groupware and other applications.

Creates and maintains documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes and service records.

Performs cost-benefit and return on investment analyses of proposed systems for use by management in making implementation decisions.

Ensures compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems.

Coordinates and performs in-depth tests, including end-user reviews for modified and new systems.

Conducts research on software and systems products to justify recommendations and to support purchasing efforts.

Monitors and tests system performance.  Prepares and delivers system performance statistics and reports.

Deploys, manages and maintains all security systems and their corresponding or associated software, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, cryptography systems, and anti-virus software.

Develops, implements, maintains, and oversees enforcement of policies, procedures and associated plans for system security administration and user system access based on industry-standard best practices.

Designs and implements disaster recovery plan for operating systems, databases, networks, servers, and software applications.

Administers and maintains end-user accounts, permissions and access rights.

Manages connection security for local area networks, company Website, intranet and e-mail communications.

Manages and ensures the security of databases and data transfers, both internally and externally.

Designs, performs and oversees penetration testing of all systems to identify system vulnerabilities.

Designs, implements and reports on security system and end-user activity audits.

Monitors server logs, firewall logs, intrusion detection logs and network traffic for unusual or suspicious activity. Interprets activity, and makes recommendations for resolution.

Recommends, schedules (where appropriate), and applies fixes, security patches, disaster recovery procedures, and any other measures required in the event of a security breach.

Assesses need for any security reconfigurations (minor or significant), and executes actions, if required.

Keeps current with emerging security alerts and issues.

Conducts research on emerging products, services, protocols and standards in support of security enhancement and development efforts.

Interacts and negotiates with vendors, outsourcers and contractors to obtain protection services and products.

Downloads and tests new security software and/or technologies.

Recommends, schedules and performs security improvements, upgrades and/or purchases.

Performs system backups.

Provides on-call security support to end-users.

Manages and provides guidance to junior members of the team.

Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions as the best of own ability.


Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related discipline, and a minimum of ten (10) years systems engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education / experience. 


Broad working knowledge of firewalls, intrusion detection systems, anti-virus software, data encryption and other industry-standard techniques and practices

Working knowledge of devices such as firewalls, switches, and routers

In-depth technical knowledge of network, PC and platform operating systems, including Cisco routers, switches, PIX, ASA, IDS / IPS, NAC, proxy servers, all Microsoft operating systems, and UNIX / Linux

Working technical knowledge of current systems software, protocols, and standards, including data link layer, network layer, transport layer, session layer, application layer, routing, tunneling, and security protocols

Strong knowledge of TCP/IP and network administration/protocols

Intuition and keen instincts to pre-empt attacks

Knowledge of applicable practices and laws relating to data privacy and protection

Skilled in the utilization of system development methodologies throughout the full project lifecycle

Ability to identify / define viable technology solutions delivering required business capabilities

Ability to design highly reliable and scalable technology solutions

Ability to develop clear and thorough functional design specifications that drive effective solution development
