Responsibilities

The unit support coordinator provides guests information, as well as, supports the efforts of the unit staff. The unit support coordinator performs designated duties under the supervision of a professional nurse in addition to handling clerical and specific administrative tasks for the nursing unit. This includes assembling patient records, answering phones and patient calls. Other duties include ordering and ensuring delivery of supplies, timekeeping via Kronos, welcome of new patients and families to the unit, orientation to patient / family areas of the unit, answering call lights, and other related functions as needed.  Additionally, the unit support coordinator can assist the unit leaders in disseminating pertinent information to the staff.

 JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

CLERICAL SUPPORT - 5002

Effectively performs a variety of clerical duties. The Responsibility and Accountability 'meets standards' when: 

  1. Accurately schedules and reschedules appointments, procedures, studies, tests and transportation as ordered; relay information to patients.
  2. Organizes and retrieves charts, organizes and compiles unit specific records in accordance with hospital policy.
  3. Copies information as necessary, obtains correct signed release of information forms.
  4. Supports the department/unit with functions such as: answering phones, responding to call lights and assisting family members with location of patients.
  5. Provides unit support for nurse manager and council activities.

COMMUNICATION - 5002

Effectively communicates and provides accurate and timely information to Hospital personnel, patients and visitors. The responsibility and accountability 'meets standards' when:

  1. Meets and greets patients and family with a pleasant attitude and courteous manner.
  2. Communicates messages efficiently and courteously to appropriate personnel.
  3. Contacts other departments to arrange for unit and patient needs.
  4. Supports the unit's patient experience

ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORD

Uses the electronic medical record (EMR) effectively to fulfill required record keeping responsibilities. The Responsibility and Accountability 'meets standards' when:

  1. Serves as resource for clinical systems use to other healthcare team members.
  2. Enters patient charges appropriately per unit routine.
  3. Documents in the EMR according to established procedures.
  4. Follows procedures for reporting problems with computer use and performs downtime procedure when necessary.
  5. Notifies IMS of any computer related issues.

SUPPLIES - 5002

Adequately maintains nursing unit supplies. The Responsibility and Accountability 'meets standards' when:

  1. Orders and replenishes supplies appropriate to the needs of the unit.
  2. Monitors inventory of supplies and reports variation in use to the Nurse Manager.

PATIENT & UNIT SAFETY

Demonstrates knowledge of how to create and sustain a safe working environment. The Responsibility and Accountability 'meets standards' when:

  1. Practices good infection control techniques.
  2. Reports any unsafe equipment and hazards to appropriate personnel as soon as possible.
  3. Ensures new equipment approval by the biomedical department before patient care use.
  4. Follows procedures for reporting broken equipment and environmental repairs.
  5. Maintains an organized and safe environment for patients, visitors, and health care workers.
  6. Requisitions repairs and/or request replacements for unit equipment as directed.

PATIENT FLOW - 5002

Assists healthcare team members in coordination of efficient patient flow. The Responsibility and Accountability 'meets standards' when:

  1. Promptly initiates the rooming of patients by being continuously aware of room availability and patients who are registered/admitted.
  2. Demonstrates ability to organize and prioritize activities according to patient and/or unit needs.
